Map of the Island of Merti

Merti is a plantation island in the Midnight Archipelago owned by Montaigne; its primary export is sugar, grown from sugar cane, and it is the leading producer of sugar in Theah. The majority of residents are slaves; they outnumber Theans by 8 to 1, and most of them have been imported from other islands in the Midnight Archipelago as the natives of the island were quickly exhausted.

Until recently, the governor of Merti was was Gustave Fleury, the Comte du Bearn; but recent political maneuvers have seen him replaced by Louis Blanchard, a former Knight of the Rose and Cross.

There are also a substantial number of rebels in the hilly country called the "Look-Behinds"; these rebel Maroons were increasing in number under the Comte du Bearn's rule, but have quieted since Blanchard's appointment.

There are no Musketeers on Merti; instead, law and order is kept by the Gendarme, a similar order of soldier-policemen. The captain of the Gendarme is Rogier Mornay, an ex-Musketeer.
