The Crew of the Banshee

The Chiefs

  • Captain John Malcolm -- Captain of the Banshee and its owner, a former Avalon Sea Dog from the Highland Marches. He's opposed to slavery and is potentially an off-again, on-again lover of the Pirate Queen of Aragosta.
  • Tom Radishes -- The Banshee's gunner. Formerly the ship's cook, he is one of the handful of sailors still remaining from the Banshee's Sea Dog days. He has an instinctive command of the complex math required for powder and windage, often baffling his junior gunners.
  • Long Ned -- The boatswain, who maintains order among the crew with a swift lash. He was recruited from Aragosta after the Banshee arrived in the Atabean. Despite being the agent of discipline -- or perhaps because -- he is popular among the more bloodthirsty segment of the crew, many of whom he recruited himself from pirate havens around the Atabean.
  • Adal Vorhees -- The ship's navigator is a Vendel and an excellent if dour navigator who was the purser aboard one of the Banshee's first prizes after striking out on its own. He has an excellent command of math and is generally responsible for the ship's supplies in addition to navigation; his ability to eke supplies out of nowhere has earned him the crew's admiration in lean times.

Crew

  • Vittoria Viani -- A Vodacce swordswoman with a cold-burning temper who serves as a boatswain's mate.
  • Jerome Dechaine --A big Montaigne sailor who joined the crew with Anne Crieux. Serves on a gun crew.
  • Nasa of Itamini -- Rahuri topsman who serves often as the ship's lookout and ambassador to the Rahuri natives of the Atabean.
  • Big Reilly -- An Inish deckhand who is the undisputed king of the informal boxing contests aboard ship. Recovering from cranial surgery performed by Doctor Orlando.
  • Von Teller -- A former De Ruyter marine, he betrayed his fellows to side with the Banshees. Has a locket matching one that Alondra's mother gave her that he won in a card game with a trader.
  • Nyembe -- One of the rescued slaves, Nyembe and his fellows were recruited by Jenny to become new crew aboard the Banshee.

Others At Sea

  • Captain Willem Travers -- Jenny's former captain, who murdered the crew of the White Rook in some occult ceremony. Now believed to be alive again and up to some evil.
  • D'Amato Strong -- Quartermaster for the mysterious Captain White, he has been recruiting unsavory sorts. He was the former bosun of the White Rook, Jenny's old ship.

Others In The Atabean

On Aragosta

  • Queen Morgan Bonaventura -- Captain Bonny is the Pirate Queen of Aragosta and chief captain of the Republic of Pirates. She has been prosecuting a war against the ATC to preserve the pirate way of life.
  • Cannonnanso Gatto -- Chief fence of Aragosta and a nominal pirate captain, he is Signore Gatto to those who don't know him well.
  • Hayley -- Former Jenny turned brothel-madam, she is an information broker on the Street tied to Cannonnanso.
  • Jack -- A Banshee topsman who is close to Axel McDuff; Axel rescued him from the clutches of a shark during the taking of the De Ruyter. Broke his back in a fall on Shatruck's Rest and is now an invalid on Aragosta.

On Ciudad Flores

  • Governor Jairo Cristobal de Vasquez -- Childhood friend of the Rodrigos, he has become Governor of Ciudad Flores. He is a boticario and quite ambitious, with a surprisingly fast rise to power.
  • Captain Felix Cabral -- Captain of the Tiburon, he is a pirate hunter with a fondness for archaeology and adventure. He is a former Castillian naval officer who was drummed out for speaking truth to power.
  • Captain-Major Jose Hidalgo -- Commandant of the Presidio de Flores, the military garrison on the island.
  • Father Fernando -- Father Superior of the Mission, he is a proponent of forcibly converting the Rahuri.

At Fort Freedom / Atabean Trading Company

  • George Rourke -- President of the Atabean Trading Company, George Rourke is a believer in the power of pure capitalism and an enemy to monarchy.
  • Fleming Rudd -- Chief Procurement Officer for the Atabean Trading Company, Chief Rudd is a friendly-faced devout Vaticine who is comfortable with the Rahuri conversion.

Elsewhere in the Atabean

  • Charles Adeyemi -- The Thean-educated leader of the seventy-six slaves rescued from the De Ruyter, he is extremely suspicious of pirates and Theans in general. He has settled his rescued slaves in a logging camp near Aragosta.

Theans

  • Father Santiago Tarago -- An Inquisitor and an agent of Cardinal Verdugo, he is the man who killed Orlando and Alondra's parents.

The Dead

  • Anne Crieux -- The Banshee's Quartermaster, she was a blonde woman who was formerly a lieutenant in the Montaigne Navy; when her ship foundered on a reef due to poor orders by her captain, she led the survivors in a small flotilla aboard the remaining longships. She and hers were rescued by Captain Malcolm, and most of her crew joined the Banshees. She was elected Quartermaster not long after when the ship's former quartermaster was found stealing and was marooned. She was the leader of one of the two major factions of the crew; her party is made up of former Montaigne sailors at its core as well as others who cling somewhat to naval tradition. (Lost at sea during a battle with the Tiburon between Ciudad Flores and Aragosta.)
  • Don Sebastian Rodrigo and Dona Micaela Villaneuve -- Orlando and Alondra's parents, killed by Father Santiago Tarago. Don Sebastian was an alchemist, while Micaela was the practical swordswoman in the family. They were lords of Cala de la Playa, the seaside castle belonging to Dona Micaela's family.
